The City Season Finale Recap: “Everything on the Line”

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

On The City season finale last night, Whitney Port put it all on the (clothing) line, while Erin Kaplan told her boss at Elle that it's gonna be her or Olivia Palermo.

Below, The Hollywood Gossip staff breaks down the events on last night's episode, awarding and deducting points as we deem appropriate. Let's get to it ...

OMG Whitney Port looks so summery and cute, we can hardly stand it. Plus 2.

Erin is on the kill-Olivia warpath from the get-go. This could be good. Plus 3.

Kelly Cutrone on why Roxy shouldn't go to Whit's meeting: "Don't you think she should bring someone who knows what the f*%k they're doing?" Plus 16.

Olivia's handling of criticism: "I'm going to refrain from commenting." That's real professional. Minus 7, because as we said last week, she shouldn't have a job.

As Whitney panics about her presentation, dramatic music crescendos and the Bergdorf Goodman buyers roll up into the building like gangsters. Plus 5.

Whitney Rules

Whitney Port can do no wrong, even in failure.

Al Roker sighting on Today! Don't tell Spencer Pratt! Plus 3.

Olivia massively flakes, even for her, leaving Joe Zee high and dry. Minus 10, but Plus 2 because at least the Today peeps always refer to him as "Joe Zee."

MTV totally changed its absurd promo for Jersey Shore to hype up the hottest, tannest, craziest housemates instead of guidos! No points, it's just hilarious.

Whitney's presentation kind of bombs, but we're giving it a Plus 25 for the following reasons: 1. She handled it gracefully. 2. She didn't get preferential treatment, and shouldn't. 3. Kelly's stuck by her and wants to help launch a full line!

After Olivia's royal f*%k up, Erin has it out with her and Joe, telling her boss it's either her or Olivia. Right before the credits roll, Joe picks ... no one! A whole season of a boring, repetitive story line and no resolution! Wow, MTV. Minus 36.

TOTAL: +3. SEASON TOTAL: +5. While we'll always love Whitney, The City failed to deliver a classic (or any) confrontation to salvage the Olivia-Erin "drama."

Thus, the episode and season barely end in positive territory. Not a total waste, but should there even be a Season 3? If so, will it decide what it wants to be?

The City Recap: “If You Want Something Done Right”

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

On The City last night, Whitney Port moved forward with her fashion line, no thanks to Roxy Olin, while useless Olivia Palermo flaked out yet again over at Elle.

Below, The Hollywood Gossip staff breaks down the events on last night's episode, awarding and deducting points as we deem appropriate. Let's get to it ...

Kelly Cutrone to Roxy, on the models she picked for Whitney's look book shoot: "The theme is fairy tale tea party, not gothic nightmare." Snap! Plus 3.

Instead of Creative Director, Joe Zee's job at Elle should be Pusher of Erin Kaplan's Buttons, because it seems like that's all he typically does. Minus 2.

Erin tells Olivia Palermo that she should stress a little more. Plus 3, because let's face it, she's right. Moron simply doesn't care about doing a good job.

Thanks to a stunt in which champagne is sprayed on everyone, Roxy does her best to sabotage her BFF's photo shoot. Who saw that coming? Minus 4.

Painful PalermoRoxy Rocks

How do Olivia Palermo and Roxy Olin still have jobs?!

Rox makes up for it by starting a cute food fight with Whitney afterward. Plus 5, because it's hard to totally dislike Roxy Olin, even if she's a terrible worker.

Olivia screws up Erin's TV shoot, again seemingly out of laziness. Here's what we don't get about this show. In this economy, and particularly in a cutthroat publishing environment, how has she not gotten fired like 14 times already? Minus 8.

Whitney's fashion photos come out looking awesome! Plus 6. Also, an additional Plus 3 for Kelly not beating around the bush when it comes to the work that Whitney Port needs to do to become a successful designer. She's like a real boss!

This is pretty much the same complaint we just made about Olivia, but we feel it bears repeating. Kelly confides in Whitney about Roxy, saying she doesn't know what to do about her ... as if she can't FIRE HER AT ANY GIVEN INSTANT. Minus 11.

TOTAL: -5. SEASON TOTAL: +2. The City didn't do a lot for us this week. Girls flaking out at jobs they were given solely because they're on an MTV reality show and clearly don't deserve in the first place is getting old. We heart Whitney, though.

“New Moon” After Party: A Star-Studded Affair

It was a literal who’s who of young Hollywood as the “New Moon” after party got under way at club Box in New York City last night (November 19).

Olivia Palermo: Big Apple Date Night

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Enjoying an evening out on the town, Olivia Palermo was spotted out and about with boyfriend Johannes Huebl in New York City on Tuesday (November 17).

The MTV cutie and her man happened to be out for The Cinema Society & Calvin Klein screening of “Broken Embraces” at the Crosby Street Hotel.

The City Recap: “Forget About Boys”

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

On The City this week, Whitney went on a blind date, Roxy's expectations of her new guy are not met, and Olivia impresses at a Brooklyn Decker photo shoot.

Below, The Hollywood Gossip staff breaks down the events on last night's episode of The Hills spinoff, awarding and deducting points as we deem appropriate ...

Roxy Olin imparts sage advice: Never leave food on the counter. Plus 1.

Whitney Port is going on a "full-on blind date." How can it truly be a blind date if he has to sign a waiver beforehand? She knows exactly who it is. Minus 2.

Blind date Patrick on his job description: "Basically I convince people to buy expensive clothes." Plus 4 for honesty, but Minus 2 for lame fashion acronyms.

Roxy and Zac seem like they could be a cute couple. For now. Plus 3.

Patrick encourages Whitney to "join forces" on the bill. We were getting a douche vibe, and this confirmed it. Why not just ask MTV to cover it, Pat? Minus 6.

Whitney, Olivia, Erin and Roxy

Olivia Palermo and Erin Kaplan's task for this week involves Brooklyn Decker pictures in Elle. Plus 5, because Brooklyn rules, and so does her husband A-Rodd.

Roxy to Whitney: "You have to come. I need you as my wing man." Poor Whitney. Always a wing man, never the It Girl. Not even on her own show. Minus 3.

Erin goes off on Olivia to Joe Zee about Olivia "expecting her hand to be held." It's almost as if she's calling out the network for giving Olivia the job. Plus 5.

Zac, despite being billed as "Roxy's date," rolls up in the club with a pack of hot girls. Kind of a d!ck move, but Minus 2 for Roxy unjustly berating him for it.

Plus 1 for the blatant Cobra Starship plug. 21st Century payola? Plus 2 more for the guy defending Olivia as "a babe" when Erin complains about her.

Roxy and Whitney annoyingly go on and on and on about their boring boy problems, but like last week, Kelly Cutrone berates their "quilting circle," so Even.

Man, Erin is gonna straight up murder Olivia soon. You can practically see the steam spilling out of her ears. Plus 2, because at least it'll be televised.

TOTAL: +8. SEASON TOTAL: +7. Annoying at times, but at least Kelly calls out Roxy and Whitney, and we can't wait to watch Erin absolutely snap.

Olivia Palermo Pops Out for Pippa Lee

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Stepping out for a night on the red carpet, Olivia Palermo was spotted making her way to the New York City premiere of “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee” in New York City on Sunday (November 15).

Joined by Johannes Huebl, the MTV reality star looked lovely as she posed outside of the AMC 19th and Broadway Theatre in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.

Olivia Palermo: Ports 1961 Promoter

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

Socialite and reality TV star Olivia Palermo was looking lovely while hosting an exclusive presentation of the Ports 1961 pre-Spring collection at Bloomingdale’s Flagship store in New York City on Thursday evening (November 12).

The “City” starlet was joined by Joe Zee (creative director of ELLE Magazine) and Tia Cibani (creative director of Ports 1961), greeting fans while showing off the brand’s latest offerings.

The City Recap: “Friends and Foe-Workers”

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

On The City this week, Roxy Olin and Whitney Port went on a work trip to Miami, while Olivia and Erin traveled there as well for Elle. What an amazing coincidence!

Below, The Hollywood Gossip staff members break down events on the new episode of The Hills spinoff, awarding and deducting points as we deem appropriate ...

Plus 9 out of the gate for Kelly Cutrone b!tch slapping (figuratively) Roxy Olin in a meeting. "Why are you talking?!" HA. Kelly's the most real person on the show.

First obvious music tie-in of the night: "Fashion" by Lady Gaga. Poor. Minus 2.

Whitney seems (at least mostly) focused on work, while Roxy just wants to par-tay. Only Plus 2, though, because there's no way Roxy should even have a job.

Whit's pal Nick meets her out, only to leave with Roxy while Whitney's in the bathroom. Minus 3, because that's typical Roxy, and for the sad look on WP's face.

Erin, as usual, is looking to catch Olivia f*%king up. Plus 2, because so are we.

Whitney, Olivia, Erin and Roxy

We thought it was a joke, but MTV just advertised a new show called Jersey Shore. The voiceover: "MTV is taking you inside a shore house like you've never seen, full of the hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos." Yes, Guidos. Ones who "keep their hair high, their muscles juiced, and their fists pumping." LOL. Plus 12.

Back to the program. Whitney and Roxy argue about last night unprofessionally at Mara Hoffman's show. Minus 7 (slightly redeemed by Kelly's profane tirade at them).

Whitney Port holds her own with the fashion designers at least. We think. Plus 5.

No Freddie Fackelmayer this week, it appears. Mixed feelings on that topic. Even.

Brooklyn Decker hosted an after-party they went to? They should have made the entire episode out of that. Minus 3 because of the generic filler chosen to air instead.

Back in NYC, Kelly berates Roxy and Whitney: 1. For their lack of professionalism; 2. For Roxy's comment that she isn't nice enough; 3. For their high room service bill: "You owe me $100. Next time go to Taco Bell." BURN! Plus 8.

Olivia on working as a team with Erin: "I... I... I'd really much like that." Minus 7 for being a terrible liar. Who can't even pretend to take the high road for once?

TOTAL: +16. SEASON TOTAL: +9. The best episode so far pulls The City into positive territory for the first time this season. Seriously, someone had to call Roxy out, and at least the Erin-Olivia feud seems to be building toward an epic meltdown.

The City Recap: “Weekend at Freddie’s”

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

This week on The City, the gang headed to the Hamptons for some fun in the sun. Unfortunately, Freddie Fackelmayer was there, but that create some good drama.

Below, The Hollywood Gossip staff breaks down all the events of the latest episode of The Hills spinoff, awarding and deducting points as many points we see fit ...

Whitney Port and Roxy Olin stripping down to bikinis in the middle of Central Park, acting like there's no one around? Really? Eh, we'll buy it, and like it! Plus 4.

Safe to say Freddie Fackelmeyer didn't become less of a tool since last week's episode. Minus 2 for his hilariously fake tennis banter and attempt to look casual.

Erin Kaplan and Olivia Palermo are doing a feature on bloggers. Sure, they're fashion-oriented, not celebrity gossip-oriented, but nice industry shout-out! Plus 3.

Whitney, Roxy and Samantha Swetra roll to the Hamptons as "Good Girls Go Bad" plays. They talk about ... good girls going bad. Plus 3 for the Cobra Starship and Leighton Meester song, but Minus 3 for obviousness, so Even.

Whitney, Olivia, Erin and Roxy

Olivia interviews some celebrity fashion bloggers and - here's a shocker - Erin doesn't think she does a good enough job. Seriously, the same plot every week? Minus 5.

Freddie Fackelmayer gets jealous when his 19-year-old brother Harry kind of flirts with Whitney. Lame, but we'll buy it, because Harry is much better looking. Plus 2.

Harry "lets it slip" (i.e. rats out) that Freddie has a girlfriend! Gasp, is it true? WTF! It's like The Bachelorette: Manhattan Blue-Blood Yuppie Family Edition. Minus 4.

Wow, Eric Zee finally lays the smackdown on Olivia! Plus 8.

Whitney: "Harry told me you have a girlfriend." Freddie: [pause] "But ... I don't know." Compelling response, you douche. Minus 3, but Plus 6 for Roxy chiming in, almost as an aside, that Harry was cock-blocking his older bro.

Another eye-rolling music tie-in: Beyonce's "Ego." Minus 1.

TOTAL: +8. SEASON TOTAL: -7. The City has picked up its game in recent weeks. We hate to admit it, but sometimes you need a complete putz like F-squared to stir up trouble. Sorta like The Bachelorette and Wes Hayden.

Olivia Palermo: Valentino Vixen

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Out supporting one of fashion’s icons, Olivia Palermo turned up for the “Valentino: The Last Emperor” DVD release celebration in New York City on Tuesday night (November 3).

Joined by her hunky beau, the MTV reality beauty mingled with a star-studded guest list including Valentino, Hugh Jackman, Julie Henderson and Adrien Brody.

Olivia Palermo: GQ Gal

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

She’s never one to turn down a publicity opportunity, and last night (October 28) Olivia Palermo was spotted at the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball 2009 in New York City.

The “City” babe was all smiles as she arrived at the Edison Ballroom, sporting a black and navy blue getup as she posed for the paparazzi.

The City Recap: “Hit it and Quit it”

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

This week on The City, Whitney Port went on another date with Freddie Fackelmayer, while Jay Lyon also wanted to know the status of their relationship.

Below, THG staff members pick apart the latest episode of the Whitney-centric Hills spinoff, awarding and deducting points as we see fit throughout ...

In the opening moments, we learn that Whit basically booty-called Jay Lyon while he was back in town, then quit him for good. Hence the title. Plus 8.

Kelly says how she started her own company to promote things she believes in. Wow, now our interns are even less motivated to write this. Minus 2.

Olivia Palermo actually interacts with Roxy and Whitney this week! Amazing. It's almost as if she has a reason for being on the show. Almost. Plus 4.

Freddie Fackelmayer invites his father, Fridolin, out to dinner with Whitney. Minus 2 for Fred's faux pas, and Minus 1 more because Fridolin was so awk.

Whitney, Olivia, Erin and Roxy

It takes Roxy Olin 12 seconds to realize Olivia is bad at her job and painful in general. She's perceptive, but Minus 1 because we still had to tolerate Olivia.

This is off-topic, but Roxy was on Brothers & Sisters this week and wasn't terrible. The fact that her parents are both on that show helps, but still, Plus 5.

Could MTV have set Whitney up with a lamer guy? Dude fake tans, bleaches his teeth, spends way too lonf on his hair and is not even interesting! Minus 10.

Samantha Swetra and Whitney debate if a dude can be a socialite. We don't know the answer, but if so, Whitney's fake boyfriend is so the epitome. Plus 2.

How long until Erin Kaplan goes postal on Olivia? Plus only 2, because they're dragging it out and she's too passive-aggressive, not aggressive-aggressive.

We never thought we'd say it, but we missed Jay Lyon. He's not without fault, but at least the guy has personality. Too bad this was just a cameo. Minus 3.

TOTAL: +2. SEASON TOTAL: -15. Scores were boosted by Olivia's integration into the rest of the show and the remergence of Jay and romantic tension.

It's got a long way to go, but positive steps, City. Positive steps.

Olivia Palermo: Big Apple Beauty

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Enjoying a swanky night out on the town, Olivia Palermo was looking lovely in uptown Manhattan on Tuesday night (October 27).

Sporting darker locks, the MTV reality beauty was accompanied by her hunky beau as she took advantage of the always-bustling Big Apple nightlife.

The City Recap: “Meet the Fackelmayers”

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Last night on The City, Whitney Port decided it was time she started dating again. MTV apparently agreed and dug up some guy named Freddie Fackelmayer.

Below, our staffers review the latest episode of The Hills spinoff and quote-unquote workplace drama, awarding and deducting as many points as we see fit ...

Whitney and Samantha Swetra compare designer shoes to boroughs of New York City. Even Gossip Girl wouldn't try to fabricate those stereotypes, but Plus 4.

At Elle, Joe Zee totally loves Olivia Palermo. Erin Kaplan totally doesn't! This not only feels contrived, we've been over it about 375 times by now. Minus 5.

Roxy Olin hangs out with a guy named Zac and expresses that she's jealous of Whitney and her life. Refreshing honesty, and use of a bra as a top. Plus 3.

Whitney decides she's going to date again. Enter Harry Fackelmayer, Sam's cute friend, who totally has a hot older brother! What are the odds? Minus 2.

The City Girls

Whitney agrees to meet up with Freddie Fackelmeyer at a barbecue. One that happens to be held at the apartment of Adam Senn and Whit's ex, Jay Lyon (who's out of town). How downright Kristin Cavallari of Whitney Port to show. Plus 7.

Kelly Cutrone tells Whitney to pee on the wall of the apartment to mark her territory. Plus 5, because that's funny stuff to hear from your boss, although we would have preferred if she instructed Whitney to top shelf the bathroom.

Adam Senn is a moron, but no longer really on the show, so just Minus 1.

Speaking of people who need to get kicked off the show, when will MTV pull the plug on Olivia Palermo? She has no redeeming qualities, her life is boring and has nothing to do with Whitney. Break out the pink slip already! Minus 24.

Putting aside the fact that his name is Freddie Fackelmayer, this Freddie Fackelmayer seems like a fairly large douche. La dee freakin' da, he works on Wall Street, wears preppy clothes and talks about surfing. Are we supposed to care? Minus 17.

Throw in another Minus 10 for the fake tan. In the Northeast.

But Plus 16 because we heard that they broke up before we even knew they dated, which is both hilarious and slightly comforting. Whit is redeemed. A little.

TOTAL: -24. SEASON TOTAL: -17. This week's scores are skewed by the sleep-inducing awfulness that is Olivia, but still, mediocre overall. Step up, City!

Whitney Port Cleavage PhotoFreddie Fackelmeyer Picture

Whitney Port and Freddie Fackelmeyer. Yes, that's really him.

The City Recap: “It’s All Who You Know”

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Last night on The City, Whitney again took Roxy's advice and tried to further her fashion aspirations, while Olivia butted heads with Erin yet again at Elle.

Below, our staffers review the latest episode of the new "workplace drama" (slash The Hills spinoff), awarding and deducting as many points as we see fit ...

Whitney Port has by far the best pronunciation of any celebrity. Girl paid attention in school. We even love how she says "Previously. On. The. City." Plus 2.

This isn't really relevant, but Spencer Pratt seemed pretty certain on Twitter that Whitney had plastic surgery in high school. Say it aint' so, Whit! Minus 1.

Roxy Olin on Whitney's designs: "I would definitely wear like half of those sketches. I'm very impressed." Plus 1 for that obviously backhanded compliment.

Surprise, surprise, Olivia Palermo looks bored and passive-aggressively feuds with Elle PR boss Erin Kaplan for the third consecutive week. Zzzz. Minus 3.

Kelly Cutrone rules. Plus 4. She doesn't beat around the bush at all when criticism is needed, but also tells Whitney Port she'll always be her "loyal bitch."

The City Girls

At the Roberta Freyman Showroom, and Rachel Roy's offices, Olivia attempts to show that she can hack it in this business. Can she? Still unclear to us, but apparently yes, according to her boss. Plus 2 for how much Erin hates it.

Minus 1 for Samantha Swetra trying to rip off that cute Lauren Conrad hairstyle!

Roxy is the Stephanie Pratt of The City. Useless, and just kinda there. Minus 3.

The Bergdorf Goodman buyer Whit meets with is named Sunni. Yes, Sunny, only spelled wrong. Minus 1. But Plus 2 for giving it to Whitney straight and kind of blowing her off. You can't expect to be a famous designer overnight!

Kelly on Whitney's visit to Sunni, which was Roxy's idea: "Yeah. It's always a good move to take advice from a girl from California who's been in New York all of two weeks and knows [bleep]." Burn! So sarcastic. So true. Plus 5.

Whitney Port as a celebrity fashion designer is something we can actually kind of buy. She seems invested in her career and at least semi-legit. We're only giving it a Plus 3, though, because that doesn't always make it fun to watch.

TOTAL: +10. SEASON TOTAL: +7. Not necessarily the most compelling half hour, but refreshingly light on the staged confrontations and BS this week.

Olivia Palermo: Bluemarine Bellissima Babe

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Always up for a night on the town, Olivia Palermo was on hand for The Blumarine Bellissima perfume launch in New York City on Tuesday evening (October 13).

Held at the Gramercy Park Hotel, the socialite turned reality star mingled with fellow guest Jennifer Creel as she helped boost interest in the new scent.

The City Recap: “Working Girls”

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Last night on The City, Whitney Port's pal Roxy Olin made quite a splash during one of her first days on the job, while Olivia Palermo struggled yet again at Elle.

Below, our staff reviews the latest episode of the new "workplace drama" (and The Hills spinoff), awarding and deducting points as we see deem appropriate ...

Roxy Olin: "I feel like I can get Kelly in, like, a second. I am, like, so serious about work." No. If you have to say that, girlfriend, it ain't true. Minus 7.

Kelly Cutrone drives a Ford so she doesn't get carjacked in NYC. Plus 4.

Meanwhile, at Elle, Erin Kaplan assigns Olivia Palermo to buy fake handbags off the street for an upcoming segment they're doing. The mere thought of this has gotta hurt for a silver-spoon fed rich girl like Olivia. Plus 3.

Their little sting not only involves a girl who's a quasi-famous socialite and on a reality TV show, but involves an MTV crew filming it. Real discreet. Minus 5.

The City Girls

In the end, Olivia can't even do this right. Work is, like, so hard compared to what she normally does. Which is, like, go to fancy parties and stuff. Minus 2.

Holy hell, that is one skinny model at the photo shoot. We're talking like Mischa Barton style. Minus 3. Way to promote a healthy body image, gang.

Roxy's big idea is for the model to get topless. A model for jeans. This is treated as if it were a revolutionary concept. Has no one seen a Calvin Klein ad before? All of their models are topless! Not that we're complaining. Even.

Plus 5 for Whitney warning Roxy that Kelly would be pissed if she didn't ask her before pitching this idea, and for being right. Always trust sage Whitney.

Poor Whitney Port worries that she's seen as the little girl that people walk all over. Don't be silly, Whit. You're the tall girl people walk all over. Minus 2.

The shady bag dealer is wearing a Konvict Muzik jacket. Akon would be proud. Plus 5.

TOTAL: -2. SEASON TOTAL: -3

Olivia Palermo Drops By PIX11

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Taking care of some promotional duties, Olivia Palermo was spotted arriving at the PIX11 studios in New York City this morning (October 6).

The “City” babe was in the house to give an interview on the PIX11 Morning News Show, gearing up for the big season premiere of her hit MTV reality show.

The City Season Premiere Recap: “Sleeping with the Frenemy”

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Last night on the season premiere of The City, Whitney Port was greeted by old friend Roxy Olin, who she tried to help find a job at People's Revolution. Meanwhile, at Elle, Olivia Palermo clashed big-time with new boss Erin Kaplan.

Below, our staff reviews the first episode of the new iteration of MTV's Whitney-centric Hills spinoff, awarding and deducting points as we deem appropriate ...

In the opening intro, Whitney reflects that nothing is the same as when she first moved to New York. In other words, MTV revamped the whole thing. Minus 2.

Roxy Olin makes her grand entrance two seconds in. Peeps are sure to mention her first and last names whenever they reference her. Solid marketing. Plus 3.

Whitney lives in the West Village now. Even, since both that area and Gramercy Park are quite trendy. Just pointing out that EVERYTHING is SO different now.

Olivia Palermo was apparently retained, and got a job at Elle magazine. Erin Kaplan is introduced as her boss. She's a tough cookie! Must. Create. Conflict. Minus 1.

The City Girls

Erin and her boss discuss how they're going to "break" Olivia and knock this "social" off her high horse. We're holding out hope for full-on hazing. Plus 6.

Whitney and Roxy meet for lunch and talk about how great it is to be single. Roxy reminds us a little of Stephanie Pratt. That's not a compliment. Minus 8.

Roxy may have been onto something when she bashed Whitney's fashion sense. Whit's outfit on the roof is heinous. Plus 1 in any case, though, because she's just so cute talking about how she doesn't want to annoy the neighbors.

"Do your job," Olivia instructs Erin, having been at Elle herself for like a day. Minus 3 for her pompousness, and Minus 2 more for The City casting another Erin right after Whitney's friend Erin Lucas got axed for being dull. Confusing!

Kelly tells Whitney Port that she hopes her friends are worth it and treat her as nicely as she treats them. Words to live by from sage Mrs. Cutrone. Plus 7.

Five guys and 30 girls at Roxy's party ... What's the opposite of a sausage-fest? Plus 3 for the girl who complained about this, but Minus 5 for the neighbor who called the cops on a pretty tame gathering. How lame is Whitney's building?

TOTAL: -1. Not the worst we've ever seen by far, but The City 2.0 still needs to step it up and decide what the heck it is before it becomes a must-see.

CFDA Fashion Face-Off: Whitney Port vs. Olivia Palermo

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Previously, we examined the fashion of Taylor Lautner and Justin Timberlake at last night's CFDA event in New York. Now, we examine a couple of city girls.

The City stars, that is. Gorgeous leading lady Whitney Port was the epitome of urban chic in a silver Luca Luca gown with criss-cross detailing on the back.

She was pushing the fashion envelope with the short shorts she wore last week, but here, she returns to classic, upscale glory. But what about her co-star?

Whitney's "social" rival supported designer David Meister in a blush strapless dress from his line. Can Olivia Palermo keep up with her style counterpart?

Whitney Port Blogs About The City Tension

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Whitney Port has posted some thoughts on Monday's episode of The City on her official blog. In "Mingling with the Commoners," plenty of tension (and more than a little class warfare) was in the air between Whitney, Olivia Palermo and Jay Lyon.

Here's what Whitney Port had to say  ...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In this week's episode of The City, we definitely had quite the range of drama. The episode began with Jay and I discussing his upcoming show over lunch.
When I mentioned that I had invited Olivia Palermo, he made a smart ass comment about roping an area off so she wouldn't have to "mingle with the commoners," (hence the title of the episode, "Mingling With The Commoners").
Erin Lucas and I met Olivia at her apartment before heading to the show.
But Olivia wasn't exactly in as big a rush as I was to get there, and by the time she was finally ready to go, Jay's band had already started playing.
Pissed Off Whitney
Whitney Port was far from pleased with Olivia Palermo's actions.
I guess Olivia felt bad about making us late, so she got Jay Lyon a gig at a charity event she was hosting. What initially seemed like a kind gesture, however, suddenly became an awkward and uncomfortable situation when at the event, all Olivia, Nevan and friends did was make fun of Jay and his band, Tamarama.
They definitely didn't try to hide it. It's an understatement to say that Jay was more than ready to go when he finished his set!
When I arrived at work the following day, Olivia asked what I thought of the event and I immediately addressed the situation, which quickly turned into a heated argument between the two of us.
Olivia felt that Jay had been unprepared in his attire for such an upscale event and he should have done his research, while I was more concerned with the fact that she and Nevan had completely humiliated Jay's band.
Olivia abruptly ended the discussion noting that the work environment was not the time nor the place for personal matters; nothing was resolved between us.
As for dating and relationship drama in the episode, Erin was definitely the main focus last night. Her high school boyfriend, JR had come back into her life in last week's episode, and returned again last night to stir up more trouble.
Things had been going so well with Duncan, but having JR around left Erin Lucas feeling torn and confused. So that's pretty much what went down last night.
Don't forget to tune in next week to see if Olivia and I sort things out and what happens with Erin's little love triangle!
Olivia Palermo: The City is Real
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009
Olivia Palermo, the socialite co-star and "co-worker" of Whitney Port of MTV's The City, has actually been an aspiring actress for a few years now.
But despite what you might have read, what she does on the glamorous reality show isn't pretend. At least that's what she tells New York Magazine.
"Acting is one of the things I'm interested in, but I completely respect it as an art form that requires lots of talent, dedication and hard work," she said.
Still, getting in front of the cameras does help prepare Olivia Palermo for a life onscreen: "I've gotten so much more comfortable being in front of the cameras over the course of shooting this season. The first few days were a little bit awkward!"
Olivia Palermo From The City
Olivia Palermo, left, with Whitney Port and Erin Lucas.
"Of course, nothing feels 100 percent natural when you're being followed by a camera crew, but I've definitely acclimated. I think that in the first few episodes, that level of discomfort and awkwardness I felt really came through on camera."
Olivia Palermo says she hopes that over the rest of the season on The City, you see more of "the real her," whatever that means. Unfortunately for the young glamazon, even she's not sure what that might look like.
"I never know ahead of time what's going to end up on the show," she said. "So watching all of our stories unfold has been really exciting for me."
Wow, watching your own life as told and interpreted by somebody else. Sounds like what Lauren Conrad has been doing for years now!
Can Whitney Port Save The City?
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009
Aspiring fashionista Whitney Port may be sufficiently blond and likable to pass as a reality TV star. But everyone agrees she's no Lauren Conrad.
That may be trouble, not only for Port's fledgling show, The City, a spinoff of the hugely successful The Hills, but for the whole documentary-soap genre that Lauren and her cohorts pioneered, according to the UK's Globe and Mail.
Lauren Conrad will return for her fifth season of The Hills this spring, but her show is clearly nearing an end: Last fall's Season Four ratings were down 25 percent, and LC herself has indicated she may be tiring of being filmed.
Therefore, The City, which was renewed for a second season this week, may hold the future of MTV's flagship franchise in its fumbling little hands.
The new show has certainly struggled to keep the format alive.
Whitney From The City
Last week, Whitney Port and her gang were getting together at an art opening, knowing that model Alli would be in the same room with the same woman who had allegedly kissed her boyfriend while she was out of town on a fashion shoot.
But as Whitney dutifully discussed the tense situation with her colleague at DVF, Olivia Palermo, and then with her Aussie rocker boyfriend, Jay Lyon, nobody really seemed all that interested in this manufactured City crisis.
Moreover, Olivia Palermo even interrupted Port midstream to tell her this was, like, TMI, a ghastly faux pas in this celebrity gossip-dependent genre.
“Jay doesn't know why [Whitney Port] cares, and Olivia doesn't care at all,” offered Jessi Cruickshank, co-host of The After Show, an MTV Canada series devoted to dissecting the lives of the apparently real people on these youth soaps.
So can MTV trust Whitney Port to carry this show - and people to watch?
Whitney Port Blogs About The City
Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
Whitney Port recently moved from The Hills to The City. It's a new City, but the drama certainly hasn't been dialed down since our girl moved East. On the contrary.
Taking time to discuss last night's episode, entitled "He Never Said He Had a Girlfriend," Whitney focused on the escalating fight between Adam Senn and his model girlfriend Allie, which we saw unfold in last week's episode.
Here's Whitney's take, as written on her official site ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In "He Never Said He Had a Girlfriend," the conflict continued between Allie and Adam. Jay and Adam threw an art gallery opening and the party had a huge turnout!

Everyone made an appearance, including Samantha's friend Catarina, who decided after a lunch chat with Samantha that it would be best to confront Allie and let her know EXACTLY what happened between her and Adam.

After hearing what Catarina had to say, Allie ran to the bathroom in tears with Adam not far behind. They left the party and after arguing outside went their separate ways.

Later on in the episode, Jay and I discussed the situation in my apartment. [Jay Lyon] had faith in his friend and chose to trust that Adam wouldn't betray Allie like that.

I, on the other hand, was a bit more skeptical.

In the final scene, Adam and Allie met for dinner at Mercer bar. Adam tried to convince Allie desperately that Catarina was making up the entire thing.

Allie chose to listen to her heart and believe Adam.

So many of us have been in relationships where betrayal has arisen.

I deeply believe that we all need to know our self worth and attempt to achieve that self confidence that we each are capable of owning.

People make mistakes, we are only human.

However, in the case of Adam and Allie, I do not even know for certain that a mistake was made. In the end, what I have learned is to always be there for our loved ones when they need a shoulder to cry on, but when it comes down to it we are the only rulers of our own destiny.

Whitney Port Discusses The City, Obama Inauguration

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

When she isn't being captured in revealing photos on the beach, the amazing Whitney Port can be found on MTV's new hit The City - or blogging about it!

Here's what the former co-star on The Hills had to say on her official site about Monday's episode, and yesterday's inauguration of the 44th president ...

In this week's episode of The City, "Boys Night Out," the usual dose of drama escalated to an all-time high. Adam's girlfriend Allie was finally introduced when Jay and I went on a double date with them. Allie is a model and has to travel a lot and was getting ready to leave for a photo shoot tomorrow. She asked me to keep an eye on Adam.

Meanwhile, Nevan was dealing with his own issues, expressing concerns about finding a job to [Olivia Palermo] while at an art gallery in Chelsea.

Jay Lyon, Whitney Port Picture

Whitney Port and badass Aussie beau Jay Lyon.

Back to Allie and Adam - [Adam Senn] and [Jay Lyon] had a boys night out, and somewhere along the line a rumor began that Adam had kissed another girl.

Adam tells Allie about the rumor as soon as she returns home from the shoot.

She believes him but can't understand why every time she leaves town he has to have a boys night out and hang out with random girls.

As for [Nevan Donahue] and Olivia - well, it looks like Nevan is going to be making a temporary home for himself on Olivia's couch!

As a 23-year-old young woman, I learn so much each and every day that sometimes it becomes too much to soak in and I just want to explode.

Every minute we have fresh emotions, new opinions and infinite thoughts that arise and eventually mold us into the women and men we are meant to be.

Mixing such a phase (my mama calls it the "quarter life crisis") with actually having to relive each moment on television can be a lot to take in.

After watching tonight's episode I really began to ask myself what love truly means. Young adults like us tend to throw the term around and treat it as a manifestation of our imaginations but it has to be so much more than that, right?

What an unbelievable, surreal day this 20th of January has been!

While watching the events of today's inauguration all morning, I couldn't help but be overwhelmed with tears of excitement at the prospect of change! I have never been more proud to be a young, American adult.

We have witnessed one of the most momentous occasions in our country's history and must remember these feelings of hope forever and ever.

May we continue to remain open to all walks of life and learn something new every day from each and every person we encounter.

Be sure to embrace such a moment and appreciate how connected we all feel today. Moreover, take from this appreciation the importance of community and sticking together. No matter our differences, we are all human beings that deserve the freedoms such change can and WILL renew.

The City Recap: “The L Word”

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

The second installment of The City was kinda weak last night, but what are you gonna do. It's hard to one-up Jason Mesnick on The Bachelor on the same night.

Oh well. In typical fashion, The Hollywood Gossip staff has recapped the episode, "The L Word," awarding and deducting points as it sees fit. Here's our rundown ...

On to the rankings!

"Have fun," Duncan, Erin Lucas' boyfriend, says to Whitney, who's still crashing on Erin's couch, or so we are led to believe. Translation: Get. Out. Plus 4.

No offense to Erin and Dunc, but their relationship seems like a bit of a snooze-fest. Titanic, really? And some of their conversations may actually make us yearn for the awkward silences and passive-aggressive retorts on The Hills. Minus 5.

Whitney is at a photo shoot when Jay calls. He found an apartment for her to look at. "I feel like I should see it," she tells an unmoved Olivia, "but obviously, work is my first priority." Translation: Please tell me it's okay for me to leave. Plus 2.

Said apartment is fairly nice. Like $6,000/month nice. No word on how she'll be paying for that, but on The City, you don't ask questions. Minus 1.

City Shot

Is Whitney Port channeling her inner Audrina being a pushover these days?

An annoying Olivia Palermo offers the following unsolicited advice to Whit: "You have to be independent, I hope you're not too demanding on Jay. You have to be your own person." She's either a stuck up b!tch, being fed lines by MTV, or both! Minus 5.

Olivia talks to her cousin, Nevan (Plus 3, because of course she has a cousin Nevan), who says he just got a $100 fine for spitting in public, but he thought it was perfectly legal, since he saw some chick do it on Flavor of Love. Plus 8.

While helping Whitney move in, Jay Lyon reveals his inner Justin-Bobby, denouncing Erin's declaration of love for Duncan. Watch yourself, Whit. Minus 7.

Whitney and Erin are definitely cute as BFFs, boring as the latter might be. Plus 3.

After being up front with Jay about their relationship, Whitney backs down big-time, saying she'd like to be Jay's girlfriend "if he wants" and having no response after he pretty much says he's not that into her. Missed opportunity, girl. Minus 9.

TOTAL: -6! A lackluster effort this week, City. The jury's still out on this show! Better step it up next week. Leave a comment with your own scores ...

The City Follows the Lead of The Hills

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

After the emotional fourth season finale of The Hills, in which Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag's big wedding was revealed to be ... not a legal wedding, the bar has officially been raised for how far a "reality" show can stretch the truth.

Good to see The Hills' spinoff, The City, hitting the ground running in an attempt to match its parent show's penchant for reenactments and faux drama.

Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo, her co-star, both attended the Grey Goose Ball for Charity in NYC last week where they filmed The City, which debuts Monday.

According to an inside source, every moment the girls weren’t repeating the same scene over and over (more than two hours), Whitney and Olivia excitedly stood behind the cameras and chatted happily like the closest of friends.

Why is this strange? They’re portrayed as enemies on the show. C'mon, The City. At least Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag didn't like each other in real life!
